students' Night Film Club: A Bigger Splash

Thursday, June 2, 2016, 11.30 p.m.

Kino Pod Baranami invites to the second meeting of the Students’ Night Film Club in English!

The main event of the evening will be a screening of the latest film by Luca Guadagnino - sensuous and imbued with erotic overtones A Bigger Splash.

At the request of the growing number of English-speaking viewers, Kino Pod Baranami launched a new series of meetings of the Students’ Night Film Club with movies, lectures and discussions held in English. In June the Club presents the latest film from the director of the Academy Award nominated I Am Love - the unique, provocative and tension-filled psychological drama A Bigger Splash, seething with sensuality and perfect in every detail. Luca Guadagnino has once again attracted some excellent actors: nominated for two Academy Awards Ralph Fiennes (Hail, Caesar!, Grand Budapest Hotel), Oscar-winning Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton, We Need to Talk About Kevin), the star of Fifty Shades of Grey - Dakota Johnson and charismatic Matthias Schoenaerts (Maryland, Rust and Bone).

The viewer's attention is drawn not only to the picturesque Mediterranean landscape but also to the Tilda Swinton's outfits, designed by Dior. The beautiful cinematography is the work of the award-winning Yorick Le Saux (Swimming Pool by François Ozon, Only Lovers Left Alive by Jim Jarmusch). The soundtrack includes the music by The Rolling Stones, St. Vincent and Harry Nilsson.

The short introducion before the screening and the discussion afterwards will be held in English by Keti Kipiani, a Georgian student of cultural studies and political science at the Jagiellonian University, interested in cinema and media art. In Georgia Keti Kipiani works for a documentary film production company, she was also an assistant director of several documentaries.

After the event, the organizers invite for a free drink at Betel Club
(pl. Szczepański 3).

TICKETS for students: 10 PLN ONLY!

A BIGGER SPLASH | A BIGGER SPLASH
dir. Luca Guadagnino, Italy/France 2015, 124’ (in English with Polish subtitles)

Venice Film Festival: Golden Lion (nominated), Main Competition

Rock legend Marianne Lane (Tilda Swinton) is recuperating on the volcanic island of Pantelleria with her partner Paul (Matthias Schoenaerts) when iconoclast record producer and old flame Harry (Ralph Fiennes) arrives with his daughter Penelope (Dakota Johnson) and interrupts their holiday, bringing with him an A-bomb blast of nostalgia from which there can be no rescue. A Bigger Splash is a sensuous portrait of desire, jealousy and rock and roll, under the Mediterranean sun.

Luca Guadagnino's sly, funny follow-up to I Am Love suddenly feels like the greatest party you have ever been invited to. Wendy Ide, Times (UK)

The film makes its hedonistic protagonists seem like characters in a classical tragedy. The intimacy between them becomes more oppressive and results in ever more extreme behaviour. The zest of the film-making belies the darkness at the core here. Geoffrey Macnab, Independent

A film that is both deeply strange and undeniably funny. Andrew Pulver, Guardian
