Dla głównej bohaterki filmu francuskiej reżyserki Hafsii Herzii rodzina stanowi największą świętość. Nora jest kobietą po pięćdziesiątce, która pracuje ponad siły, by niczego nie zabrakło jej najbliższym. Zamiast narzekać na swój los, zmienia jedynie ubranie robocze i z lotniska, gdzie sprząta samoloty, udaje się do starszej kobiety, którą opiekuje się po godzinach.
Powrót do domu znajdującego się w ubogiej północnej części Marsylii nie oznacza dla niej jednak końca problemów. Sen z powiek spędza bohaterce najstarszy syn Ellyes, który w areszcie oczekuje na proces za popełnione przestępstwo. W pozostałych dzieciach, niespecjalnie zainteresowanych poprawieniem niełatwej rodzinnej sytuacji, też trudno szukać jej oparcia. Nadzieja na lepsze jutro u Nory miesza się z niepewnością, choć kobieta stara się robić wszystko, by być jak najlepszą matką.
Nagrodzony na festiwalu w Cannes film Herzii to poruszająca opowieść o macierzyństwie rozumianym jako bezgraniczne poświęcenie i przedkładanie potrzeb bliskich ponad swoje. Siłą Dobrej matki jest czuły realizm, zarówno w sposobie obrazowania rzeczywistości, jak i portretowaniu bohaterów. Świetnie zresztą zagranych, choć trudno się dziwić, bo Herzi, dla której to druga reżyserska próba, sama ma duże aktorskie doświadczenie.
| In this film by French director Hafsia Herzi, Nora is a woman in her 50s who works tirelessly to provide for her loved ones. Family is sacred to her, so rather than complaining about her fate, she just changes her work clothes as she goes from cleaning planes at the airport to her evening job caring for an elderly woman. And coming home to the poor northern part of Marseille isn’t the end of her problems. She worries about her eldest son Ellyes, who’s in custody awaiting trial for a crime he committed. She gets little support from her other children, who don’t have much interest in improving the difficult family situation. Nora's hope for a better tomorrow is mixed with uncertainty, although she goes to great lengths to be the best mother she can be. Herzi's film, an award-winner at the Cannes Film Festival, is a moving story about motherhood seen as unconditional devotion and prioritizing the needs of loved ones over one's own. The strength of Good Mother is its sensitive realism, both in its clear look at reality and in the richness of its characters. The performances are excellent, which is not surprising, since Herzi, directing her second feature film, has a lot of acting experience herself.
