Park Chan-wook's new film is a story about a man who will do anything to regain his lost status and his former life. No Other Choice will be screened at Kino Pod Baranami, as part of the English-language Cinemino series, on Wednesday, March 25th, at 6:05 PM.
When the job market is ruthless, you have to eliminate the competition. The protagonist of No Other Choice – the new film by Park Chan-wook, the director of Oldboy, The Handmaid, and Decision to Leave – literally takes matters into his own hands. The Korean master of genre cinema offers a disturbingly accurate diagnosis of contemporary anxieties – in his uncompromising, auteur style.

Man-su (played by Squid Game star Lee Byung-hun) leads a perfect life, but it only takes one day for the idyll to turn into horror. The protagonist loses his job at a paper factory, and along with it: his status, masculinity, identity, honor, and the sense of purpose in life. To regain them, he will stop at nothing, especially since wet job brings just as much satisfaction as paperwork.
While mercilessly mocking the rat race, corporate mentality, and male ego, the director also pictures the contemporary job market in the age of AI. Similarly to the cult classic Parasite, No Other Choice also delivers insightful observations about class tensions and tumultuous social changes, and conceals them under layers of dark humor. Half jokingly, Park Chan-wook poses a provocative question: is there a job you'd kill for?
Cinemino is a series of screenings for international audiences, during which viewers from around the world come together to watch the latest Polish and international productions. Each meeting consists of a film screening at Kino Pod Baranami and an informal post-screening discussion at Betel Club. The event is held in English, and the films are shown either in English, or with English subtitles.
The Cinemino series is hosted by Krzysztof Bielski (Jagiellonian University) and Małgorzata Mączko (Kino Pod Baranami).
